OBJECTIVES

Students will:

  • Examine how the Tutsi diaspora and resistance to refugee return contributed to the outbreak of civil war civil war in 1990.

  • Describe how ethnic identification systems institutionalized discrimination and increased vulnerability for Tutsi.

  • Analyze how ideological messaging and propaganda were used to spread fear, dehumanize Tutsi, and justify acts of violence.

  • Explain how Tutsi families made critical survival decisions amid rising fear, misinformation, and deteriorating security conditions.

  • Analyze the rise of extremist militias such as the Interahamwe and their role in escalating violence leading up to the genocide.

  • Identify early warning signals and patterns that indicated the genocide was becoming inevitable.
