REFLECT AND REMEMBER: “NO GREATER LOVE” STUDY GUIDE

(Discussion Questions and Activities for Classrooms, Families, and Book Clubs)

INTRODUCTORY ACTIVITIES

OBJECTIVES

Students will:

  • Define genocide and understand why the term was created.

  • Understand genocide as a process through identifiable stages.

  • Discover Rwandan society and culture prior to the genocide.

  • Recognize the complexity of causes rather than a single explanation for the outbreak of violence.

TIME EXPECTATIONS

The introductory lessons will take a minimum of two instructional sessions, with each session lasting approximately 60 minutes.

LESSON

Here is a suggestion for working through these activities.

Day 1 Focus on conceptual foundations
Activities: Genocide Defined and Ten Stages of Genocide

For the Genocide Defined activity, students will need about 15-20 minutes to read the page and answer the questions. You may wish to plan another 10 minutes to either discuss as a whole class or have students discuss in small groups.

For the Ten Stages of Genocide activity, help the students to become acquainted with the various stages. Encourage students to refer to the “Ten Stages of Genocide Worksheet” to help them to identify evidence of the different stages as they complete the assigned reading. In preparation for class discussion, the worksheets provided in this study guide will ask students to consider the stages that they see present in certain accounts.

Day 2 Focus on historical application
Activity:
Rwandan Genocide in Context

Given the deep and complex nature of the topic, some debrief time is essential.
Reassure students that confusion or discomfort can be part of critical thinking.
